If you need a free or low cost therapist with a lower sliding scale, these are all great resources in the great Saint Louis Area. Be aware many of these resources rely upon graduate students, provisionally licensed, or newly licensed counselors as well as some more experienced counselors.
As I explain to my own clients, less experienced counselors are more likely to know more of the most recent research, theories and techniques as they were just trained in many of them in school. Whereas more experienced counselors may have worked with a lot of clients and gained confidence they may also be more impacted by biases or not know some of the newer approaches.
I always recommend that you find a counselor with experience working with whatever your issue may be. Many of the community health centers listed below have a lot of experience working with more chronic or complex mental health and comorbidities as well as more commonplace therapeutic issues. In the therapy world paying more for therapy doesn't always mean that you get better care. Interview your therapist, ask them what they've done before, who they've worked with, why they got into counseling. Be involved in the process and you'll get so much more out of it.
